English Speech Sounds

Before we start, we must know about our organs of speech. Because no one animal can talk as humans converse with each other and can produce different sounds with the help of respiration. And these sounds are  produced by the organs of speech

What is mean by Organs of Speech?

We need an Airstream Mechanism for the production of speech sounds. We breathe in and out is called respiration. When we breathe in the outer air through the nose to lungs, that is inhaled is called Inspiration or Inhalation. On the other hand, when we breathe out the air that comes out of the lungs is called Expiration or Exhalation which is used for the production of sound in English. The lung air which comes out is known as Pulmonary Egressive Airstream is used for the production of English sounds. Before the air goes out into the outer atmosphere, various organs in our body convert the air into speech sounds. These organs are called the organs of Speech.

The organs of speech are divided into three groups :

1) Respiratory System :

The respiratory system consists of 1) The Lungs 2) The muscles of Chest 3) The wind Pipe (Trachea).

2) Phonatory System :

The phonatory system formed by the Larynx or Adam's Apple and also known as Voice Box.

3) Articulatory System :

The articulatory system consists of
1) Nose
2) The Mouth which includes: 1) tongue  2) The teeth 3) The roof of the Mouth includes the teeth ridge or alveolar ridge or Alveolum, Hard Palate, Soft Palate also called Velum, Uvula or Small finger. This is the most important System by which we can produce various sounds. While producing speech sounds, all the articulatory organs take part in it. The lungs air passes through the oral cavity and the Nasal Cavity and various sounds produce.

What are Speech Sounds :

Speech sounds are those sounds which are produced by human beings.
They are divided into two categories.
1) Vowel Sounds
2) Consonants Sounds

What are the Vowel Sounds?

During the production of vowel sounds, the air escape through the mouth freely and we do not hear any friction sound is called vowel sounds. additionally, vowel sounds are made without audible slopping of the breath by the tongue, lips, etc. There are 20 vowel sounds in the English language.

What are Consonants?

During the production of consonant sounds, the air escape through the mouth with friction, a kind of hissing, and plosive sounds. Additionally, consonant sounds are produced by completely or partially abstracting the air being breathed out through the mouth. There are 24 consonant sounds in the English language.

How does the syllable make?

Speech sounds are divided into vowels and consonants. When the consonants and vowels are yoked together with certain phonemes and heard the sound we can say that is a syllable as "home' has a syllable. A syllable consists of one or more speech sounds. A syllable is a single unit of sound utterance within a puff of air from the mouth and if a syllable has more than one speech sound, one of them will be a vowel and the rest consonants. A vowel sound is a nucleus or the central part of the syllable. On the other hand, a consonant is marginal or it occurs at the beginning or at the end of the syllable. When a consonant occurs at the beginning of a syllable is called Realising Consonant and when a consonant occurs at the end of a syllable is called arresting syllable.

Conclusion:

Now we have to know about how a syllable is made. But why we are learning this? Consonants, vowels, syllables, etc. because it generates the word and that is the origin of the sentence. When we learn how to occur the word properly we will create interest in it and then the sentence. English is an accentual language and all other classical languages are rhythmic. While occurring sentences in English, we have to give stress on a particular syllable is called accent.
